SOUNDS & STORIES FROM RUHNU ISLAND (EE)
A poetic meeting of violin, voice and stories from an island that (did not) disappear
Sounds and Stories from Ruhnu Island performance presents a musical journey accompanied by stories and visuals of the Ruhnu island the rich traditional and cultural heritage, its people and their history. Swedish Estonian heritage lost after World War II is brought to new life with the sound of fiddles, voices and storytelling. Over a decade two dedicated folk fiddlers Karoliina Kreintaal and Lee Taul, and
a singer-storyteller Kairi Leivo have been working hard to bring back to life a part of musical heritage lost in the 1940s.
The band has released two albums. Their second album "Echoes of the Sea" was released in March 2025, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the large-scale exodus to Sweden. The music and stories are accompanied by a series of videos filmed during expeditions to the island, featuring archival footage.
